Day Thirty-Eight - The Dunes of Dunhuang

Day thirty-eight, September 18. After visiting the fort yesterday, we took a 9-hour bus through the Gobi desert to the town of Dunhuang, famous for its many old buddhist cave paintings. We took it easy today, but in the evening, we rode bikes out towards the sand dunes. We escaped the 80 Yuan ($10) admission charge (way too much!!) by riding our bikes to where there was no fence and entered that way. It was also better because we had our very own perfect sand dune to climb. Way off in the distance I could see hundreds of tourists on camels or three-wheelers on their way up the dunes (apparently they weren't even allowed to walk up- they had to pay extra for transportation). Anyway, we climbed up this one just in time for awesome sunset. Dunhuang, Gansu province.
