Ode to my Traveling Companion

We spent four months traveling together in China, and probably out of those 120 days (or 2880 hours), we spent about 5 hours apart. The other 2875 hours were spent side by side. Hour after hour on endless bus journeys. That’s A LOT of time together. So now that we’re apart [...]

Photo-a-Day in China

The biggest relief of being home is that I no longer have to take photos everyday. While in China, I started a photography project- a photo a day in China. Taking photos everyday, and choosing one of those as a representative photo really took over our lives while traveling. I ended up [...]

The Real Culture Shock

Friday was my second weekiversary of being in Canada, and I still haven’t eaten at Tim Horton’s! The time is flying by just like it did in Asia, and now Christmas is even over. I’m impressed with what I’ve done over the last two weeks, and I’m really glad we made the decision [...]

Merry Christmas in Chinese Characters

This month I’ve had about 60 searchers come to my website in hopes of finding out how to write “Merry Christmas” in Chinese. Each day, that number grows and now I’m starting to feel a little guilty because there is absolutely nothing on my site that shows how to write “圣诞快乐” Merry Christmas, or [...]

Bye Bye Beijing

We spent a total of 8 full days in Beijing, the longest we’ve ever spent in one place in China. It was well worth our time since we were busy the whole time with full days of sightseeing.
After almost 4 months of visiting semi-famous sites, and paying high admission prices for disappointing [...]

North Korea to Russia… almost

We just returned to Beijing from a 4-day trip up north to two cold cities- Dandong, a city right across the river from North Korea, and Haerbin (Harbin), a Russian city in China.
Dandong actually has a small tourism industry based on the fact that it’s right on the border with North Korea. [...]

Dreaming of Rice Paddies

We left Xishuangbanna on an epic two night sleeper bus ride (via Kunming) in search of the most beautiful rice paddies in China. When we finally arrived in the main rice paddy town, Yuanyang, instead of paddies, this is what we saw:
I first heard of Yuanyang on TrekEarth, and was excited because it’s relatively [...]

Xishuangbanna

Xishuangbanna- what a cool name. Even though I can read Pinyin, it took me a while to figure out this name- I used to just call it ‘banana’. The Chinese name is just made to sound similar to the Thai name for this southern region of Yunnan province, which borders on Laos and [...]
