Ceremony at the Confucius Temple, Taichung
September 28, 2004
We arrived at the Confucius temple at 6am on Confucius' Birthday (and Teacher's Day)- just in time for the hour long ceremony. Confucius temples aren't overly abundant in Taiwan, the nearest temples to us are in Changhua and Taichung, and we chose to drive to Taichung because the temple is bigger. The ceremony consisted of many little ceremonies, none of which we understood, but we were still happy to be there.

The people in yellow are boys, who danced along to the music played by musicians on both sides.

The 'Officers' are the men in purple. They assisted with the sacrificial feast, gates, and many other rituals during the ceremony.

September 28th is the only day of the year when a ceremony is held in a Confucius temple. It's also the only time when people can go inside the actual temple. It was nice and simple inside, and strange that it wasn't full of burning incense like all the other temples in Taiwan.

There were several sacrificial remains inside the temple. A little freaky looking, and Mark made me touch the pig.
